Austin Neon Icons

Iconic Austin businesses are well represented in neon on any given evening. Start your evening off by purchasing a pair of hand-stitched leather boots at Heritage Boots. Pull them on and walk down Barton Springs to Chuy’s for some of its famous Tex-Mex. Walk it off with a jaunt back down Barton Springs to Threadgill’s for some live music at the place Janis Joplin got her start. Finish the evening with an Amy’s Ice Cream.

Austin Skyline from the Lamar Footbridge

The rail bridge crossing Lady Bird Lake in Austin has served the city in more ways than one can imagine. Prior to the construction of the Highland Lakes upstream of Austin, the city was regularly inundated by floodwaters barreling down the Colorado River. Bridges were routinely washed away and the city was frequently severed in two. A story was over heard recently in our gallery. A woman recalled her grandfather who had been a doctor in Austin in the early 20th Century. This rail bridge withstood the floodwaters of a particularly devastating flood. She watched from the South shoreline as her grandfather carefully crawled across the bridge as the white water churned below, so that he could reach his patients in the city hospital. Today the bridge still serves rail traffic and offers local graffiti artists a dramatic canvas.
